Our Mission

As a science-led metabolic health brand, Spindle thinks about strength differently. We treat the body as a system and at the center of that system is metabolic health, the foundation for how the body generates energy, builds strength, and sustains function over time.


We believe strengthening the body’s metabolic systems leads to a longer, healthier life. With Spindle, we support the interconnected biological systems that allow people to stay strong, capable, and independent as they age.

Why metabolic health matters

Many people think about metabolism like a dial that can be easily tweaked for specific results: fast or slow, high or low. 

But it’s more complex, affects many biological systems, and it shapes how well the body ages. Metabolism is the body's ability to generate energy, put it to use, and store what's left in the correct places. 

At the center of metabolic systems are the mitochondria, the cellular powerhouse that produces most of the energy the cell needs to function. 

How efficiently the mitochondria work impacts how well the body runs. The metabolic system creates an energy loop made up of four interconnected stages:

ENERGY INTAKE

Energy Intake

The body breaks down food — carbohydrates, fats, and proteins — before nutrients enter the cells. The food taken in and the timing of that intake impact how the system runs.

Energy Conversion

Nutrients are converted into Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) within the mitochondria, transforming them into a usable form of biological energy.

Energy Expenditure

Energy Expenditure

ATP is used as energy currency to perform bodily functions, from powering muscle contraction to aiding the immune system to helping with cognition. The better the body uses fuel, the easier it recovers, builds strength, and becomes more resilient.

Unused energy is stored as glycogen or fat for later use the body can draw upon when it needs it. If the surplus stores aren’t used, energy builds in the wrong places and the whole loop works against itself.

Why we started with Muscle+

Our bodies’ energy loop doesn’t run on its own - a healthy muscle system is one of the biggest drivers of metabolism. Building muscle and staying active helps the body regulate blood sugar (glucose) and put energy to good use. This is why building and maintaining muscle strength as you age is a good investment in preserving long-term metabolic health.

Muscle strength is essential for protecting bone and joint health, as it supports the balance, mobility, and skeletal loading needed to maintain bone density and prevent falls as you age.

Preserving muscle quality and strength is critical for a healthy, independent life. That’s our motivation.

Meet our scientific advisor

Marcia C. Haigis, PhD, is a Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and Co-Director of both the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging Research and the Bertarelli Rare Cancers Initiative.

She is a leader in the Aging and Immunity Program at the Gene Lay Institute and is affiliated with the Broad Institute, the Ludwig Center at Harvard, and Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center.

Her research has made seminal contributions to understanding how mitochondrial metabolism links aging, immunity, diet, and cancer. She has received numerous honors, including the 2023 Samsung Ho Am Prize in Medicine, and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2024.

Dr. Haigis earned her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin and completed postdoctoral training at MIT studying mitochondrial metabolism.

Mitomics Lab

Mitomics Lab is the name of Spindle’s Seoul-based research institute dedicated to advancing the science of metabolic health.

Built on more than five years of research, the lab houses over 30 scientists and combines cell-based research, microbiome science, multi-omics analysis, animal studies, and human studies to understand how the body produces, converts, and uses energy.  

The lab’s focus is on mitochondria, the microbiome, and metabolic flexibility, helping us better understand how the body adapts to everyday changes in energy demand, nutrition, and lifestyle, all of which play an important role in healthy aging and long-term healthspan.

For Spindle, Mitomics Lab is not only a source of scientific discovery, but a foundation for what comes next: products and solutions grounded in biological insight, supported by evidence, and designed for real life.
